Program Overview
VIU's Greece: Arts and Culture Field School welcomes students to an international experience that educates on the unique performing and visual arts history of the region.
We'll interweave course curricula and intertwine assignments in this new study abroad focused on arts traditions that still resonate with designers and creatives today.
Students enroll in two courses: THEA 321 (Theatre, Text Analysis) and ARTS 103 (Interior Design, Textiles), with an optional third course available.
Historic architecture and interior design elements, textiles and mosaics from distinct cultures and eras, sculpture, paintings and archaeological proofs will be seen first-hand.
Visits to historic sites and outings to theatres and performances will prove the innovations of past artists and infuse students with an interdisciplinary perspective on the power of the arts to impact (if not propel) culture.
By travelling the roads that Oedipus walked and by exploring the Theatre of Dionysus at the Acropolis, students will learn from archaeological wonders about the establishment of the performing arts as a vital aspect of a healthy civilization.
By trekking up 300 stairs to the monasteries at Meteora and by climbing the Sacred Way at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Delphi, students will view ancient Greek relics, Classical patterns and icons, and Byzantine colours and contours that teach arts approaches and appreciation.
We’ll heighten awareness about the value of the arts within culture, adventuring to key locations that have influenced the evolution of design, artistic practice, performance, and production.
Plus, there will be free time to visit the beaches, do some shopping, and make this academic excursion your own!

All payments must be made by the student record. Credit cards are NOT accepted.
Passports: All participants must have a valid passport good for six months after your return. Apply for a Canadian passport or pick up an application at any Canada Post office. Students must be able to legally travel outside of Canada and through/to the USA.
International students going abroad must make sure their TRV and Study Permits are up-to-date and won't expire while they are abroad.
Students will be responsible for applying for and securing their own visas (where appropriate).
